Pigeon on a nest

Feral pigeon problems resolved with netting

Feral pigeons are so often referred to as flying rats and they certainly are a urban pest, no matter where you live you’re bound to have a flock of feral pigeons nearby and, the reason for that is that these birds were once domesticated for use as a food source and they have adapted to live alongside us and that’s the problem with pigeons.

Pigeon
Feral pigeons act fast and they will quickly move in and take advantage of any potential roost site and once a flock is in place they can be difficult to dislodge. The birds have adapted from wild rock doves and are at home living alongside us, so much so, that they now breed just like rats do; all year long. As they breed throughout the year, this means that suitable nest sites are always in high demand.
There are many different types of deterrent for pigeons but first you must understand the birds and how they behave. All birds and feral pigeons are no different, like to perch on a good vantage point and from there they will be on the lookout for predators and any potential food. This is an important characteristic of pigeons as they prefer to scavenge from what food we throw out or simply leave lying on the floor. Have you ever wondered why there are so many pigeons in town centres? Left over lunch and dropped takeaway food is what they are looking for and this explains the high numbers in town like Bracknell.

Feral pigeons - bird pressure explained

An example of spiking in the wrong pressure area
Pigeon on a nest
If you have pigeons perching routinely on a property this is termed as low pressure and the installation of metal or plastic spikes will deter them from returning. Spikes only work in low pressure environments; if installed in higher pressure areas the birds will simply drop twigs and rubbish into the V shape of the spikes until they’ve built up enough of a platform to start laying eggs. By installing spikes in the wrong area you’re actually helping the birds to nest on your property.
Some visual deterrents may work in low pressure areas however as pigeons are one of the few animals that are able to recognise their own reflection, sticking a plastic owl on a roof may not be as effective in the long term as you’d think.
If pigeons are staying overnight this is termed a roost and you’re now moving into the medium pressure environment, spiking may still be effective but from experience, these birds will persist in trying to get into the area and it’s only a matter of time before the birds will begin building nests and laying eggs.
We often find feral pigeons roosting under roof top solar panels installed on houses, and within weeks they will have made a nest, as these birds breed all year long the only thing that slows or stops the cycle is the lack of suitable nest sites. Once a small flock begins roosting, they will quickly begin breeding and the problem quickly deteriorates.
When the birds have built their nests this is known as high pressure; the pigeons will not leave the site even if you have a hawk flying over the area; birds of prey are used in pest control to scare pigeons off but they will quickly return to the area and if the flight times aren't’t staggered then they’ll get used to the timings and just avoid the area at these times, feral pigeons aren't’t stupid.
When you’re looking at medium or high pressure sites the most effective form of deterrent is to install netting; these can be used either horizontally or vertically and they encase the area, physically preventing the birds from getting to the roost site.

Total pigeon control in Bracknell

Pigeon
The advantages of installing bird netting is that this is a humane way to control the pigeons, we don’t kill or hurt the birds as our presence scares them away from the area whilst we’re installing the system and when we’re gone they can’t access the area. This means that the birds will leave; sometimes they will stay around for a while but without cover to roost and breed they will have to find a new site. As competition for these sites is high and most suitable sites are already taken, the flock may be unable to find a new nest site, so they are unable to breed; an effective form of bird control without harm to the animals.
Bird netting is effective against any number of birds, from one to a hundred a correctly installed net will work against any number and when a translucent net is used rather than a black one it is virtually invisible giving an effective and discreet bird deterrent. Our technicians are trained in the installation of bird netting and we have a wide range of fittings at our disposal which means we can rig a bird net anywhere.
In accordance with Working at Height Regulations we are also IPAF trained and we can hire and use a variety of motorised booms and scissor lifts to give us safe access just about anywhere. As these nets are UV stabilised their lifespan is around ten years when correctly fitted, we can include access zips and even steel and mesh doors to allow contractors access for plant machinery that maybe behind the netted off zone.

A correctly fitted bird net should be virtually invisible and its presence means that the pigeons no longer have access so you’re free from the noise of the birds, the discarded feathers and their excrement, and the smell associated with a build-up of pigeons faeces. We fit bird nets for a wide range of premises both in the commercial sector and for residential customers, from underground car parks, hospital roof top plant machinery to a small urban balcony; if you’ve got a problem with pigeons then we can offer you a cost effective solution.
We are also licensed waste carriers and we carryout guano removal and cleaning, this service is available for both the domestic and commercial sectors and we can give you a no obligation quote for any bird clean up required.
Pigeons are a nuisance that everyone can do without, we often clean and rig nets to barrier balconies on flats and I’m surprised that people put up with the mess, the noise and the disturbance for so long. Our netting methods means that we do not harm the birds, we just get rid of them for good.
